Age calculation methods vary significantly across cultures. In many Western societies, a person’s age increases annually on their birthday. For example, someone who is 3 years and 11 months old would still be considered 3 until their next birthday when they turn 4.
In other cultures, the approach can be different. Some traditions include the current year when counting age. In this system, someone described as 20 years old is actually in their 21st year of life. In the traditional Chinese system, for instance, a person is considered 1 year old at birth, and their age increases at the Chinese New Year rather than on their actual birthday. As a result, a baby born just one day before the Chinese New Year could be considered 2 years old only two days after birth.
Age calculation can become more complex when considering months and days, especially when dates fall near the end of a month. For example, it’s clear that from February 20 to March 20 equals one month. But if the period is from February 28, 2022, to March 31, 2022, it could yield two outcomes. If we see February 28 to March 28 as a month, the difference is one month and three days. However, if both February 28 and March 31 are counted as the end of the month, it would just be one month. Both methods are valid, but for consistency, the first method is typically preferred.
